I will be visiting each classroom throughout the school year to conduct whole class lessons. The classroom component addresses developmental issues common to elementary students.
Classroom lessons offer the best opportunity to provide guidance to the largest number of students in a school. Counselors work with students in large groups wherever appropriate because it is the most efficient use of time. Large group work involves cooperative learning methods, in which the larger group is divided into smaller working groups under the supervision of a counselor and/or teacher. The counseling curriculum, composed of organized objectives and activities, is delivered in individual classrooms with content modified to suit appropriate developmental levels. School counselors and teachers may co-lead some activities. Counselors develop and present special units which give attention to particular developmental issues or areas of concern in their respective schools and they help prepare teachers to infuse the lessons into their classroom curriculum.
In an effort to guide children and create a positive and safe learning experience for all students at Roosevelt, lessons will be presented by the counselor in every classroom. Lesson topics are determined by the needs of the students. Some topics include:
Counselor Orientation
Bullying Prevention
Character Education
Digital Citizenship
Respecting Differences
Worry
Friendship
Feelings
Sharing
Stress
Health Fair Lessons
Success
Transition to Middle School
